Reinventing Porcelain: Celebrating the Meissen Manufactory’s Tercentennial

by

Malcolm Gutter

Collector, Author and member of the San Francisco Ceramic Circle

About Malcolm Gutter's Lecture: This lecture dovetails with the exhibition Evolution of a Royal Vision: The Birth of Meissen Porcelain, on view at San Francisco International Airport (details at http://www.flysfo.com/web/page/newsletter/v110.html#10 ). The exhibition - singular in the English-speaking world - celebrates the 300th birthday of Meissen, the preeminent European porcelain manufactory in the first half of the 18th century, thereupon a continual source of artistic inspiration for other ceramic producers. While tracing the early development of the manufactory the lecture will hopefully provide a brief concordance for objects in the exhibition. The lecture explores the economic, political, and cultural context of the reinvention of porcelain, including Augustus the Strong's almost insatiable appetite for "white gold" from Asia and later his own manufactory. What porcelains did he acquire from China and Japan, intended for his unique but sadly unfulfilled dream for a porcelain palace? How did they influence design of porcelains from Meissen? What forms were developed for the manufactory's early red stoneware and white porcelain? For what social purposes were the porcelains intended; what diplomatic role did they play towards building Saxony's statecraft? A product of the late medieval/early modern mind - alchemy and modern science - Meissen porcelain's very pictorial attributes tells the story of its era as no other body of art. The visual presentation will rely almost exclusively upon objects in the exhibition from the manufactory's "Golden Age".

About Malcolm Gutter: Malcolm Gutter is an economist by profession, and a collector and independent researcher of ceramics, while having an interest in all aspects of the decorative arts by avocation. He holds degrees from the City College of the City University of New York and the University of California, Berkeley. He was a Professor of Economics at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills for 35 years. In 1976 he studied at the Study Centre for the History of the Fine and Decorative Arts in London, and subsequently started giving courses on the history of interior design and surveys of Western Decorative Art at both Foothill College and the University of California, Berkeley Extension. He is a well known collector and consultant for early Meissen and other ceramics, and has published articles in antiques magazines and journals on Meissen porcelain. An article "A Notable Discovery: The Earliest Depiction of Americans on European Porcelain" is forthcoming in the journal KERAMOS. He belongs to many ceramic collector organizations and is on the Board of the SFCC. In 2004 he was named amongst the top 100 collectors in America by the magazine Art and Antiques.
