About the Lecture: This beautifully illustrated lecture will
present highlights from the Chipstone Foundation's important collection
of 17th and 18th century British and American ceramics.
Drawing upon his diverse experience, Mr. Hunter will provide a
broader context for many of these objects using his archaeological
background and experience with the history of ceramic technology.
In addition, a thoughtful social framework will be
presented for better appreciating the role of teapots and
punch bowls in 18th-century Anglo-American culture
About our speaker : Robert Hunter is a specialist in
British and American ceramics with 30 years of professional
experience in historical archaeology. He was the founding
director of the Center for Archaeological Research at The College
of William and Mary. In addition to his exposure to
ceramics as an archaeologist, Mr. Hunter served as curator of
Ceramics and Glass in the Department of Collections at Colonial
Williamsburg. He is a partner in the business PERIOD DESIGNS
; a innovative firm specializing in the reproduction of 17th-
and 18th-century decorative arts. He has
been most recently appointed Editor of the annual journal, Ceramics
in America published by the Chipstone Foundation of Milwaukee,
Wisconsin. Mr. Hunter lectures widely and participates in
the New York Ceramics Fair in January each year.
