The March meeting of the San Francisco Ceramic Circle will
be held on Thursday, 21st March in the Florence Gould Theater
at the Palace of the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, San Francisco.
Entrance is from the West terrace from 7.30pm. The lecture will
start at 8.00pm.
About the Lecture: What is this pottery maiolica or majolica?
What makes this pottery so special? Who are the artisans that
produce it? How does one approach this ancient art form? Ten years
of experience helps. A virtual tour of the Grazia Factory in Deruta,
Italy in Umbria with a commentary by Betty Priolo, an American
artist. The raw clay arrives at the factory and becomes a shinning
work of art sold in the factory store. This is the same pottery
seen in many museums in the world. The people who produce this
ancient craft have something very special and not easy to come
by.
About the Speaker: Betty Priolo was born in San Francisco
of Italian parents. She received her MFA from California College
of Arts and Crafts and a BA in sculpture from Cal State Hayward.
A trained color consultant, she moved to Italy in 1987 to do color
consulting. That turned into learning Italian, studying ceramics
and eventually designing for the Grazia Factory. Her one of a
kind ceramics are sold in the U.S. and Europe.
Mini exhibit: Please bring examples of Maiolica. Set up time
from 7:30pm.
Next meeting: Thursday, 18th April 2002. "China to Order"
a lecture by Daniel Nadler
