The Seminar

This seminar, comprised of six lectures by three eminent speakers, will explore the

use of ceramics in the great houses of 18th century Europe. The talks will cover

both the finest ceramics of the period used for elaborate entertaining and the use

of ceramics in home heating, the dairy and for dining.

 

The Program

Friday 26th January 2001

 

 Optional tour of two collections. Participation limited to 25 registrants

About our speakers

Dr. Ulrike Grimm was appointed Curator of the State castles and gardens of Baden-Württemberg, Germany in 1995. She has responsibility for the collections and the magnificent early 18th century interiors at the Residenz Rastatt, Schloss Favorite and Bruchsal Castle. Her special interests are the collections of ceramics and glass at the summer palace of Schloss Favorite formed during the time of Augustus the Strong.

Professor Dr. Rudolf Schnyder was apprenticed as a potter and studied at the University of Berne before doing research in Spain and the Middle East. He was appointed curator at the Swiss National Museum (1961 - 1996 ) and Professor at Zurich University (1968 - 1998). He became president of the International Academy of Ceramics in 1974. He has authored many publications on European and Islamic art, especially on ceramic subjects.

Selma Schwartz is a specialist in Sèvres porcelain and associate curator, ceramics at Waddesdon Manor, a Rothschild country home with a major collection of 18th century French decorative art. As deputy keeper she was involved in the restoration of the manor and was responsible for the creation of the new (1995) Sèvres exhibition rooms. She has been responsible for exhibitions of Sèvres porcelain from the collection including the re-creation of an 18th century dessert table. She also teaches in New York at the Cooper-Hewitt / Parsons School of Design in the Masters program and advises on the cataloging and display of porcelain collections.

About the seminar program

The seminar begins with an optional tour of two important San Francisco collections conducted by their collectors. This tour is limited to 25 participants, with space allocated in order of receipt of registration, at a cost of $35 per person.

The main program of the seminar starts at 6.00 pm on Friday with registration and a reception. Access to the museum will be from the West terrace. Wine, beverages and refreshments will be served. There will be one lecture starting at 7.00 pm. Friday's program will finish by 8.15 pm.

On Saturday, the West terrace doors will be open from 8.30 am and the program starts at 9.00 am with mid morning refreshment at around 10.15 am and a break for lunch starting at 12.30 pm.

At the previous SFCC seminar attendance exceeded the private seating capacity of the Legion Café. For this seminar, a set lunch is being offered as an option at a cost of $27.50 per person with a limit of 70 persons. Seating will be allocated in order of date of receipt of registration. Complimentary wine and beverages are included with the lunch thanks to a generous donation of wine by an SFCC member. Adequate time has been allowed to enable others to lunch in the public section of the Café or to lunch offsite or to explore the museum's collections.

The afternoon program will resume at 2.15 pm for the final two lectures followed by a panel discussion of written questions submitted by the audience. The seminar will conclude at 4.45 pm.

Registration

To register for the SFCC 2001 Seminar please print and complete the registration form below and mail with your check to the San Francisco Ceramic Circle. Your cancelled check will be your receipt.

Please note that a late registration fee will be due for any registrations mailed after 12/29/2000 and we will be unable to accept any registrations reaching the SFCC after 1/19/2001.

Those registrants requesting the pre seminar tour will receive notification of their status for the tour. Refund checks will be mailed to any not making the 25 person limit .

Registrants requesting the set lunch must select their choice of entree. For multiple person registrations please indicate which selection belongs to each registrant. In the event that lunch requests exceed the Café capacity, ONLY those NOT able to be accommodated will be informed to make alternative arrangements. If you do not hear from the SFCC you may assume that your lunch request has been accepted. Refund checks will be mailed to any not making the 70 luncheon limit.
