San Francisco Ceramic Circle
June 21st, 2001 Meeting
From Catalina Clay: A Reflection of Time and Place
an illustrated slide lecture by
Steve Soukup
Collector, Writer and Ceramic Consultant
The June meeting of the San Francisco Ceramic Circle will
be held on Thursday, 21st June in the Florence Gould Theater at
the Palace of the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, San Francisco.
Entrance is from the West terrace from 7.30pm. The lecture will
start at 8.00pm.
This is the first of two lectures arranged by the San Francisco
Ceramic Circle as an introduction to the exhibit "California
Pottery: from Missions to Modernism" running at the San Francisco
Museum of Modern Art from July 20th through August 14th, 2001.
About the Lecture:
Catalina Clay Products during its day realized
a high class standing despite the largely equalizing, effects
of the Great Depression. Neighboring a celebrated island resort,
the small beachside pottery garnered praise across our nation.
Considered by many today to be California's quintessential art
pottery, its body of work is clearly outside of the East Coast
experience that has dominated and traditionally defined the term
"American art pottery". This illustrated commentary
will explore Catalinaware's regional influences and the unique
circumstances of a time and place when American esthetics, economics
and social fashions were in a state of flux.
About the Speaker:
Steve Soukup is affiliated with and regularly writes for the
American Art Pottery Association and the Tile Heritage Foundation
focusing on early twentieth century Californian art pottery and
tile history. A recognized expert in these related fields of study,
Steve participates in organizing museum exhibitions, educational
forums and advocates a broader recognition and understanding of
California's contributions to the potter's art. As a collector,
Catalina Clay Products remains his foremost passion - the ultimate
expression of the California experience and dream.
Next meeting: Thursday, 19th July 2001. Members Pot night
