The Meissen Swan Service of Heinrich Count Brühl

The May meeting of the San Francisco Ceramic Circle will be
held on Sunday 6th May in the Florence Gould Theater at the Palace
of the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, San Francisco. Entrance
is from the West terrace from 7.30pm. The lecture will start at
8.00pm.
About the Lecture: The Meissen "Swan
Service" of more than 3000 pieces made for Heinrich Count
Brühl, who managed the Meissen factory for Augustus the Strong,
is without doubt the most famous and elaborate dinner service
ever made. This illustrated talk will discuss the genesis of this
service, the artists involved in its creation, the forms and decoration
of the service and its subsequent fate.
About the Lecturer: Dr. Ulrich Pietsch is Direktor, Porzellan
Sammlung im Zwinger, Dresden. He is a renowned authority on Meissen
porcelain and as Director he has presided over the most important
and extensive collection of Meissen porcelain in the world since
1994. Prior to his current appointment Dr. Pietsch was Director
of the Museum for Art and Cultural History of the Hanseatic Towns
at Lübeck. Dr. Pietsch has lectured widely and published
extensively. Among his most recent publications are the catalog
for the exhibition of the Swan Service, the catalog of the Carabelli
collection of early Meissen porcelain and the book "Johann
Gregorius Höroldt und die Meissener Porzellan-malerei"
published in celebration of the 300th anniversary of Höroldt's
birth.
