"The Legacy of Collectors: European Ceramics at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston"

The May meeting of the San Francisco Ceramic Circle will be held on Thursday, 20th May in the Florence Gould Theater at the Palace of the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, San Francisco. Entrance is from the West terrace from 7.30pm. The lecture will start at 8.00pm.

About the Lecture: Beginning with a gift of European porcelain in 1895 by George Wales, the collection of European ceramics at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston has grown primarily through the gifts and bequests of a number of passionate and generous collectors. This lecture will focus on some of the collections formed by these donors, several of the donors themselves, and their impact on the ceramic holdings of the Museum

About the lecturer: Jeffrey Munger holds degrees from Princeton and Harvard and has spent his career associated with Museums in the Boston area. He joined the Museum of Fine Arts as an assistant in the department of European Decorative Arts and Sculpture in 1976 and was associated with the Fogg Art Museum while at Harvard. He returned to the Museum of Fine arts in 1982 as Assistant Curator and was appointed Associate Curator in 1992. Mr. Munger has contributed to publications on subjects as diverse as French furniture, upholstery practices from the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century, ceramics, enamels and Chinese bronzes. Among his affiliations are the French Porcelain Society, The China Students Club (Boston) and the American Ceramic serving on the Board of Directors of the A.C.C. since 1997

Mini exhibit: Attendees are encouraged to bring examples of 18th century European ceramics (including British) for display and discussion. Set up from 7.30 pm.

Next meeting: Note day and location ; On Saturday, 26th June 1999 at Filoli in Woodside at 1.30pm the SFCC will meet for a tour of the House and Ceramics collection at Filoli Hosted by Tom Rogers, Curator of Collections. For those wishing to have lunch and spend time in the gardens before the tour, there will be access to the gardens from 10.00am and a private lunch in the gardens at 12.30pm at a cost of $20.00 per person. Reservations for this event will be required. We will send out further details on or before 5/28/99 and will try to facilitate carpooling for those wishing to attend.
