Decoration of Vincennes and Sèvres Porcelain, 1740 - 1800".
The mini-exhibit will be of finely painted porcelain. Set
up is at 7.30pm
About the lecture:
This talk will chart the stylistic development of painting
and gilding on Vincennes and Sèvres porcelain in the 18th
century. Because the factory employed the finest artists of the
period, such as François Boucher, as consultants, the decorators
had access to a wide range of material for their inspiration.
This talk will look at various aspects of the decorators' professional
lives and how they embellished porcelain with what must surely
be the finest quality of painting and gilding of any 18th century
porcelain factory
About our speaker:
John Whitehead is equally at home in France or England. He
was educated in both countries and currently resides in France
and has his business, specializing in 18th century Sèvres
porcelain, on Wigmore Street in London. He has a special interest
in 18th century French decorative arts and has studied the role
of the Marchands Merciers in the development and marketing of
the French style in the 18th century. He has written a book on
this subject and has lectured extensively on all aspects of the
French decorative arts in France, England and the United States.
