San Francisco Ceramic Circle May 21st Meeting
"Art, Enterprise, Reform: A look at American
Arts and Crafts pottery"
The May meeting of the San Francisco Ceramic Circle will be
held on Thursday, 21st May beginning at 7.30pm in the Florence
Gould Theater at the Palace of the Legion of Honor in Lincoln
Park, San Francisco. Entrance is by the West Terrace doors. The
lecture will start at 8.00pm.
Our speaker will be Jeffrey Herr, Executive Director of the
Banning Residence Museum Wilmington, California. His lecture is
entitled "Art, Enterprise, Reform: A look at American Arts
and Crafts pottery".
The mini-exhibit will be "Arts and Crafts period ceramics"
Set up is at 7.30pm
About the lecture:
The Arts and Crafts movement arose in England in the 1880's
as a return to a simpler style of construction and decoration
after the stylistic elaboration of the mid-Victorian era. It provoked
a strong sympathetic response in American design and especially
in the field of pottery. Mr. Herr will present an overview of
American Arts and Crafts pottery focussing on the significant
contribution of women to the movement in the period from 1885
to 1920.
About our speaker:
Jeffrey Herr spent over a decade in banking prior to gaining
a Masters degree in Art History and embarking on a career as a
Curator beginning as a Research Assistant in the Decorative Arts
Department of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1988. He
has held Curatorial positions with the City of Los Angeles and
is currently Executive Director of the Banning Residence Museum
which is located in Wimington. Mr. Herr has curated and written
catalogs for a wide range of Arts and Crafts and Contemporary
decorative arts exhibits including some devoted specically to
Arts and Crafts pottery. He has lecture on this subject to many
groups including the American Ceramic Circle.
