The many wars and rebellions of the 19th century had a bad affect on trade and manufacture.

In France however Sevrés continued to make luxury items and to produced innovative glazes and designs including pate-sur-pate. Paris with its decorating studios and Limoges with its manufacturers became the main centres. By 1848 Ginori at Doccia was the only Italian factory left.

International Exhibitions after 1851 were showcases for ceramic wares and all countries eagerly competed for medals.
